Whether you have a small altar in your room or a large mandap in your living room, these ideas will help you create a divine space for celebrating Lord Ganesha. Happy decorating!

MANDAP

Ganesha, the elephant-headed god of wisdom and prosperity, is one of the most popular deities in the Hindu pantheon. He's celebrated during Ganesh Chaturthi, a ten-day festival culminating in his immersion in a body of water. If you're planning to celebrate this festival and need to choose a mandap for Lord Ganesha, here are five things to keep in mind.

1) The size of the mandap should be proportionate to the size of Ganesha.

2) The height of the mandap should be such that Ganesha can easily be seen from all angles.

3) There should be space for devotees to gather around Ganesha.

4) The flooring should be clean and free of clutter.

5) The backdrop behind Ganesha should be auspicious and representative of his attributes.

LIGHT & FLOWERS

The mandap is an important part of the festivities. Here are three ways to add festive flair:

  1. Use flowers to create a colorful backdrop; placing bouquets of flowers in {decorative traditional vases} adds that extra special touch
  2. Hang decorative items like tapestries or drapes; the brighter the colour - the better. Afterall, Lord Ganesha is a happy God!
  3. Harness the beauty of soft lighting, especially during the evening puja. Place candles or {tealights} around the edges to create a soft glow.

TORANS

Here are two ways to hang them up.

Option 1: With ribbons

If you use ribbons, tie them around the top of the mandap and then drape the torans over them. Make sure the bottom of the torans reach the ground. You can either have someone hold them in place or use weights to keep them down.

Option 2: With ropes

If you use ropes, tie them around each corner of the mandap and then drape the torans over them. Again, make sure the bottom of the torans reach the ground. You can either have someone hold them in place or use weights to keep them down.
